NI Assembly Committee For Education Inquiry Into The ETI and SIP

From Tuesday 16 April 2013, the Northern Committee of INTO instructed members to boycott all aspects of the arrangements for the new end of key stage Cross Curricular Skills assessment in schools. This includes the arrangements for reporting levels of progression to parents.

At the Annual INTO Northern Conference in Derry at the beginning of March INTO delegates unanimously passed the following motion:
‘Conference condemns CCEA and the Department of Education for the introduction of a cross-curricular skills based assessment which is not fit for purpose. Conference calls on the Northern Committee to initiate a boycott of the cross-curricular assessment arrangements until such time as they are teacher-friendly, work-load proofed and fit for purpose, in line with INTO policy. Conference further calls on Northern Committee to boycott the introduction of assessing using ICT until the issues surrounding numeracy and communication have been resolved.’

Following the recent determined representations made by INTO to CCEA, DE, MLAs and the Education Committee of the Assembly, DE has announced that external moderation of the new CCAs is suspended for 1 year for KS1 & KS2.

CCEA has informed schools that the new arrangements for assessment of the cross-curricular skills of Communication and Using Mathematics at the end of Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 will be in place from September 2012. Assessment of ICT will follow in 2013.
